Purely natural makeup does not exist, a recent report from China Consumer's Association claimed.

The report said makeup is a mix of several ingredients including chemical ingredients. Deionized water accounts for most of the makeup, and natural plant ingredients constitute only a fraction of all the materials.

Therefore, purely natural makeup using only ingredients extracted from plants is merely an advertising stunt from cosmetic companies, the report said.

"Some of the ingredients in the makeup may be natural, but its main part and carriers must be synthetic, " Zhang Jingyuan, general secretary of Chinese Flavor Cosmetics Industry Association, said.

Manager of Public Relations of L'Oreal China, Ren Weiwei, said makeup belongs to a branch of the chemical industry called "fine chemicals." Therefore, chemical means have to be used.

報告稱，通常情況下，化妝品是由多種成分，包括化學成分配制而成，其中占成分比例最多的常常是去離子水，天然植物成分只是其中一小部分。

因此，純天然植物化妝品的說法，只是商家的一種宣傳噱頭。

中國香料香精化妝品工業協會秘書長張京原表示：“化妝品有些添加的物質可能是天然的，但是它的主體的組成、載體等這些東西肯定都是合成的。”

歐萊雅（中國）公關部經理任威威同時表示，化妝品屬于化工行業的一個分支——精細化工，就必然會有一些化學的手段。
