Universal love and non-aggression

Updated:2022-10-13 | By:The Academy of Contemporary China and World Studies

Universal love and non-aggression

These are two basic doctrines of the Mohist school of thought.

Universal love means that you should love others as you love yourself, and love others' relatives and people of other states as you love your own, so that all people will love one another. Such affection does not stem from blood ties or social status. It is equal, without differentiation. With universal love among all, conflict can be avoided between individuals, family clans and states, and all can enjoy equal benefit.

Non-aggression means opposition to unjust warfare. The Mohists regarded immoral aggressive wars as acutely harmful to society. Not only does the country being attacked suffer great damage, the country that starts the war also suffers serious casualties and property losses. Therefore, unjust wars should be averted.

At the meeting marking the 60th anniversary of the initiation of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, held in June 2014, Xi Jinping pointed out: It is no coincidence that the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence were born in Asia, because they embody the Asian tradition of loving peace. He said that the Chinese nation has always held such beliefs as "peace among all nations" and "universal love and non-aggression."
